Chia Seed FAQs
Chia seeds are one of the most nutrient-rich foods on the planet. They are full of Omega-3, which are essential for brain and heart health. In fact, gram for gram, chia seeds have 10x more Omega-3 than salmon, 3.5x more antioxidants than blueberries, 15x more magnesium than broccoli and 5x more calcium than milk. Chia is also packed with dietary fiber (Mamma Chia beverages provide 26% more fiber than flax seed) and plant-based protein!
Chia is neutral in flavor so it can be easily incorporated into just about any recipe.
Chia seeds will last up to 18 months when stored at room temperature. We believe our product is best when consumed before the Enjoy By date and do not recommend you consume your product if expired.
The birth places of chia are Mexico and Guatemala, but it is now grown in several other places around the world including Argentina, Ecuador and Paraguay. Our USDA Certified Organic Chia Seeds are sourced from North Mexico, Central and South America. More specifically: Mexico in North America, Guatemala in Central America and Paraguay in South America. Since Mother Nature is often unpredictable and a certain region may experience a drought or early freeze, it is imperative that we work with multiple Certified Organic growers in many regions. Wherever the highest quality organic chia is grown in a particular season plays a huge factor in where we source our organic chia seeds throughout the year.
Nope! Unlike flaxseeds, chia seeds do not have a hard shell and do not need to be ground in order to benefit from the nutrients. They are very bio-available due to their soluble fiber shell.
Chia seeds do not need to be hydrated (or soaked) in order to be ingested, they are perfectly fine to consume dry! We prefer to hydrate them in our products, such as in our Organic Chia Beverages and Organic Chia Squeeze. This happens naturally when they are placed in a liquid, as chia has a soluble fiber shell that is very bio-available. That being said, there are many recipes that call for dry seeds and dry chia seeds can be added to anything from yogurts to salads for a delicious nutritional boost.
Enjoy as much Mamma Chia as you’d like! One serving naturally includes Omega-3, dietary fiber, plant-based protein and minerals. You are not limited in the amount of chia you can consume.
The chia seeds that we consume and the chia seeds used in the popular product, Chia Pet, are the same, just used in a different application. And no, you won’t start sprouting if you ingest chia seeds.

At the moment, only the pouch cap is fully recyclable (#2 HDPE). Although our pouches are currently not fully recyclable, they do have many benefits over alternative packaging when it comes to their environmental impact. As our pouches are lighter, flexible, and more compact, they require less energy and fewer raw materials to produce, and result in far fewer greenhouse gas emissions when transported to your local store.
That being said, we are working diligently towards improving our pouch material’s recyclability and their impact on the environment. We are members of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (OSC2). The Sustainable Packaging Coalition’s flexible film recovery group and OSC2’s packaging collaborative is continuously working to identify and test pouch recyclability solutions.
We are concerned and remain committed to find sustainable packaging solutions for our entire line of products. We are pleased to share that our glass bottle Chia Beverages remain fully recyclable and our Chia Seed Bags can be recycled with store drop-off (visit how2recycle.info to learn more).
